Welcome to Respond2Hate
Hate speech detection for low-resource languages
Respond2Hate is an ERC-funded project dedicated to combating online hate speech against marginalized communities, particularly in the Global South, where rising internet use has intensified exposure to harmful speech, amplifying its damaging effects on these communities.

About Respond2Hate
We are a team of researchers at the Center for Information and Language Processing (CIS), the computational linguistics institute of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich (LMU Munich). Our mission is to develop cutting-edge Natural Language Processing (NLP) solutions for languages that are less commonly supported by technology (low-resource languages), ensuring that all communities have access to effective protection against online hate speech.
To achieve this, Respond2Hate aims to curate high-quality hate speech detection datasets across a diverse array of low-resource languages. Such datasets are essential requirements for any technology combating hate speech. Our datasets are meticulously adapted to the cultural backgrounds of various countries, ensuring that they are both country- and target-group-specific. By incorporating local nuances and context, our datasets strive to be more representative of the real-world challenges faced by marginalized communities in different regions.
In addition, Respond2Hate is developing a customizable browser extension. This tool, hosted at CIS, LMU Munich, can be freely installed and tailored to meet users' personal needs. The extension is designed to reduce hate speech directed at specific target groups, empowering individuals to create a safer online environment.
Through these efforts, Respond2Hate is not only advancing the field of NLP but also making tangible strides in protecting vulnerable communities from the adverse effects of online hate speech.
Project leader
Respond2Hate is a project led by Hinrich Schütze, a distinguished Professor and Chair of Computational Linguistics, as well as the Co-director of the Center for Information and Language Processing at LMU Munich. With a strong focus on developing advanced computational methods to counteract hate speech, Respond2Hate draws on Professor Schütze's extensive expertise in linguistically-informed Neural NLP.
